Altium advises Advent International on the sale of Thalia Bücher GmbH to a buyer consortium led by Herder Verlag
Altium acted as financial adviser to Advent International on the sale of Thalia Bücher GmbH, the leading cross-channel book retailer in German-speaking Europe, to a buyer consortium led by Herder Verlag, one of the oldest publishing companies in Germany.
Thalia operates over 280 stores in prime locations as well as a competitive online (thalia.de/buch.de) and digital business (Tolino). With a range of over one million eBooks, the Tolino alliance offers one of the largest German eBook assortments.
Under Advent’s ownership in the last four years, Thalia’s store portfolio was streamlined and modernised and the online shop and digital market offering improved.
After the successful completion of the restructuring, Advent is now selling the Company to a strategic bidder consortium led by Herder family, one of the oldest publishing families in the Germanic region, with over 200 years of history in the book industry. The new shareholders will bring additional book and digital transformation expertise into the Company to further boost Thalia‘s growth. The vast industry knowledge is supplemented by increasingly important digital expertise. The Kreke family as well as Thalia’s management will also (re-)invest in the Company.
Advent International and the Kreke family acquired Thalia as part of the P2P of Douglas Holding AG in 2012. With the sale of Thalia, Altium has successfully completed a long-term commitment which began with Advent’s acquisition of Douglas Holding AG.
The transaction is subject to anti-trust clearance.
