Startupbootcamp Berlin accelerates with Mercedes-Benz, HDI and Bosch

Start-up program focused on Mobility, Connectivity, and Big Data

sbclogoStartupbootcamp Berlin is partnering with Mercedes-Benz, HDI group and Bosch. Under the name “SBC2Go”, all partners support a selection of young start-ups in a 3-month-program not only in financial terms but especially with know how, experienced mentors as well as marketing and communication measures. This year the focus areas are Mobility, Connectivity, and Big Data.

From hundreds of worldwide applicants, only ten promising start-ups with technological backgrounds will be chosen. Teams will each be given EUR 15,000, free office space, the support and the access to a global network of mentors in order to bring their visions to reality. The program will end with an “Investor Demo Day”, where the start-ups present their business models to potential venture capitalists.

The global brands Mercedes-Benz, HDI and Bosch are cooperating with Startupbootcamp to tap into the open innovation movement driven by early stage, nimble start-ups which are often below the radar of global companies.

Dr. Frank Spennemann from Business Innovation; the Daimler lab for innovative business concepts, is project manager for the participation of Mercedes-Benz at Startupbootcamp Berlin: „Business Innovation is a diverse team of technical and business managers based in Stuttgart, Beijing, Sao Paolo, Palo Alto and Buenos Aires. They focus on discovering profitable new ideas and learning in the process. Partnering with Startupbootcamp Berlin will accelerate our access to innovation and will plug us into an impressive community of alumni, mentors and investors. At the same time we support start-ups in developing business ideas and increase their market value.  Due to our global presence we can open doors to new markets.“

With Mercedes-Benz, Daimler produces high-end vehicles and also develops success stories like the free-floating car sharing service car2go which already has over 7,000 vehicles in 18 cities on the road in Europe and North America.

Gerhard Frieg and Gerhard Heidbrink are supporting the project for HDI group. Frieg is a member of the Board of Management for HDI Versicherung AG,  and is responsable for Product Management and Marketing. Heidbrink is a Board Member of HDI Gerling Industrie and among others responsible for the area of motor insurance. HDI and HDI-Gerling Industrie are part of the Talanx Group, one of the major insurance groups in Germany and Europe with a premium income of EUR 26.7 billion (2012) and more than 22,000 employees.

Gerhard Frieg of HDI states: “HDI has become established as one of the leading b2b2c providers in the German market for motor insurance with strong ties to the automotive industry. This facilitates our integration within the value chains of our partners and our customer services undergo a rolling program of continuous improvement. Today, one of the focuses for the value chain in insurance business is digitisation, for example in conjunction with insurance concepts based on telematics. Mobility, connectivity and big data are a top priority in this environment.”

Gerhard Heidbrink says: „HDI-Gerling has more than a hundred years of experience as an industrial insurer. In Germany, we are among the leading providers of complex insurance solutions for industrial customers and corporations. We support our customers in more than 130 countries around the world, not only with customized insurance products but also with an extensive consulting and customer service. This also applies to the area of fleet insurances. Topics such as mobility, data networking and IT-based driver assistance systems have already found their way into this field. Therefore contributing to Startupbootcamp is very important for us.”

The partnership with Bosch is led by Dr. Claus Schmidt. Dr. Schmidt is managing director at Robert Bosch Venture Capital GmbH which has invested in 14 start-ups since it was established in 2008. The Bosch Group is a leading global supplier of technology and services, active in the fields of automotive technology, energy and building technology, industrial technology, and consumer goods. „We have world-class challenges and world-class engineers working to solve them,“ said Dr. Schmidt. „Over the last 20 years, Bosch has invested around EUR 50 billion in its own research and development activities. More than 42,000 men and women work in R&D at 86 Bosch locations worldwide. Software development for the interconnection of devices and systems is now a focal point of research and advanced engineering work at Bosch. The internet of things and services gives rise to a large number of new business models, which will form a network of extremely diverse services. Bosch intends to exploit this potential for growth.“

Startupbootcamp Berlin is led by Alex Farcet, who co-founded Startupbootcamp and launched its initial program in Copenhagen in 2010.
